How the heart can falter

Giovanna MacKenna

HOW THE HEART CAN FALTER, Giovanna MacKenna’s first poetry collection, is the story of the experiences that build us, of the people whose actions are the tools that carve us, of the unflinching hope of a child’s love, of the constant friction of a life lived in grief, and the rescue to be found in the natural world.

How the Heart can Falter was brought to life in close collaboration with Giovanna during a period in residence in Collemacchia, Italy, funded by The Museum of Loss and Renewal.

The cover artwork for How the Heart can Falter was created by artist Emily Fong, a former Taking Time / Prendendo Tempo artist in residence.

The Museum of Loss and Renewal Publishing hosted the online book launch of How the Heart can Falter during which Giovanna shared a selection of her poems alongside special guest readers Christina Thatcher and Claire Askew.

Whilst in many ways this a deeply personal collection, MacKenna explores the experiences that build us all. Many readers will be able to identify with them, though they may not have the talent of MacKenna to describe them. This is a work of considerable courage and profound insight that at times proves a difficult, intensely moving read, but that, after all, is often the characteristic of great writing. There’s no doubt in my mind that MacKenna is star in the literary firmament who will shine every more brightly as she writes more.”

“What a launch, what an incredible poet, what a beautiful room, what sensational readings from the Co-stars. This night is for @giovmacpoet – a heart with holes, so it can open for us all ♥️♥️⭐️⭐️♥️♥️⭐️⭐️????????????????????

“I’ve got to say that last night’s launch of @giovmacpoet ‘s new collection ‘How the Heart Can Falter’ featured A-list poems and sets by Giovanna. If you don’t know her poetry, you’re missing something special by this emerging talent. PS she’s a great performer too! “

“Just a quick email to congratulate you on last night. Not only was the poetry top class, but you performed the poems so movingly.
…Sincere congratulations on what I genuinely believe was the best Zoom launch I have been to.”

“First up, MASSIVE thank you to @giovmacpoet for inviting me quite literally into their heart. You sometimes know, when you hear someone on an Open Mic, that they are destined for greatness, and that’s what I knew with Giovanna. Their poems are self propelling and sustaining.
It was fantastic also to hear @OneNightStanzas and @writetoempower in support… and it was a lovely touch to have them read @giovmacpoet ‘s work too. Top quality evening, thank you SO MUCH.”
