Unfolding 1: Surfaces, Boundaries, and Beyond

Katja Kerstin Hock

Unfolding 1: Surfaces, Boundaries, and Beyond evolved during Katja’s residency with The Museum of Loss and Renewal in Collemacchia, Italy, in 2022. The period in residence started with conversations between Katja and Tracy Mackenna, and was funded by Nottingham Trent University, UK. In the lead up to, and during her residency Katja reconsidered and revitalised her artistic practice and her position as an artist.

The environment in which the residency is situated enabled Katja to rekindle her childhood curiosity, to tarry then focus then explore.

This beautifully composed and carefully produced artist’s publication is housed in a bespoke printed cardboard box. It contains a cast of a Collemacchia walnut, printed images of photographs made in Collemacchia and the making of the publication, and a conversation fragmented across text pages. The contents are unbound for the viewer/handler to rearrange at will and to stimulate a variety of viewing/presentation methods. Additionally, a binding method is provided should the viewer/handler wish to settle on a fixed order and mode of use.
