As Orkney’s weather shifts from the bitter cold of winter into softer, warmer Spring temperatures, I am on the beach at Birsay Bay.
Walking on 400 million year old rocks and continuously re-forming patterns and volumes of sand, I regularly make notes as drawings and brief text annotations.
Touching the remarkable and highly varied stone surfaces has guided me towards a closer study of traces, imprints, patterning and graffiti formed by the movement of wind, water and debris harnessed by the shore.
These clay pieces are being fired and glazed in Orkney, in potter Robin Palmer’s workshop.
