PUBLISHING as an artistic PRACTICE, 2025
Artist's Publishing, Curation, Language, Making, Publishing, Residency, WritingPosted on November 3, 2025

The Group Residency was devised by Tracy Mackenna, Curator of The Museum of Loss and Renewal in partnership with publishing artist and independent curator Fernanda Aránguiz M. of PUBLICAR, Santiago, Chile.
PUBLISHING as an artistic PRACTICE was led by Tracy and Fernanda who share a passion for the design, production, publishing and dissemination of printed matter and digital publications. Additional subject-specific sessions were delivered by multidisciplinary experts including by Berta Ferrer, Architect of Books (Arquitecta de libros).
The aim of the residency was to provide a supportive and stimulating environment to develop residents’ production skills and knowledge of artists’ publications, printed matter and publishing as an artistic practice. Alongside individual practice, the residency had a focus on knowledge exchange, creating opportunities to learn from each other.
The residency was devised around the idea of publications as platforms for creative encounters among subjectivities, narratives, disciplines, media and others; and as a means for sharing our particular and subjective senses of the real. Formatos de lo real [Formats of the real] asked ‘what is your relationship to books and publishing?’, Querido lector: no lea [Dear reader: don’t read] explored medium versus message, and Publicar como práctica … [Publishing as a … practice] enabled the creation of a collective publication from concept to physical object.
Our remarkable residents were Mark Aitken (NLZ, UK-ENG), Carmen Dukes (USA), Michelle Hall (IRL), Andrea Izurieta (MEX, UK-(ENG), Constanza Jarpa Luco (CHL), Christine Moog (UK-ENG), Katia Nethercot (UK-ENG), Claudia Sambo (ITA).
PUBLISHING as an artistic PRACTICE will take place again in 2027.
